On one of my early trips to Berlin, as an opera fan and an Otto Klemperer fan, I was obliged to make a pilgrimage to the site where the opera house had stood. There’s a modest plaque marking the location, which seemed insufficient recognition for the role it had played in Berlin and Germany’s political and cultural history. I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen a photo of the entire building, so thank you for sharing it!
This building vanished almost entirely from the city’s memory - possibly because of its mixed history, especially after January 1933. Which is a pity as it stood for so much good and cheerful.
True. As a history buff and an armchair urbanist, the loss of any historic structure pains me a bit. I was completely thrilled with that little surviving sliver of the Anhalter Bahnhof.

Always such a joy to discover traces of the old Berlin still clinging on to life.
