Berlin im Winter by Renate Döbler, 1977. Via Galerie für Naive Kunst, Berlin.

Openly or in secret: everybody loves trivia. According to Cambridge Dictionary, the word stands for “unimportant or little-known details or information”. “Little-known”? Perhaps. But “unimportant”? I beg to differ.

Trivia are often nothing but compact bombs of fascinating knowledge. They are informative, educating and often amusing. And very satisfying subjects to collect.

For the past two decades I have been doing just that: carefully picking up and storing anything that caught my eye (or ear) as relating to Berlin. And since I might never write that great Berlin opus that many of us would wish to beget (for let us be honest, who has time to become the next Dostoyevsky or Döblin? - not to mention the necessary talent), it is a Berlin Book of Trivia that I have produced instead.

A book which will be launched as “Berlin Trivia Companion” some time later this year.

But before that day comes, dear reader, Berlin Companion’s paying subscribers will get a chance to get to know many of the collected facts and stories: in short texts delivered straight to your mailbox. Subscribers with an annual plan will find more of them in their post, while Founding Members, or “Berlin Companion’s Companions”, will also receive a copy of the printed book once it has been launched.

After the tragic events of last year interrupted my work on my Berlin Calendar, I will also be updating the said calendar by adding the missing days to the collection. Again, only paying subscribers will have access to those. Having given up my day job to focus on what I love most and can best, this lady has no choice but to re-introduce a coin-operated turnpike. There will be, of course, also free posts for all.

Today’s post opens a new paying-subscribers series on this Substack - a series devoted exclusively to Berlin trivia. And as you already know, it is not a subject to be treated lightly:-)

I hope you will enjoy it and thank you reading!
