On March 17, 1949 the first Governing Mayor of West Berlin, Ernst Reuter - the one of the eponymous "Ihr Völker der Welt, schaut auf diese Stadt!" speech - planted the very first gifted tree sapling in the de-forested Berlin’s Tiergarten.
