On this day in 1932 in Berlin the classic of the Weimar Republic cinema, Slatan Dudow’s film "Kuhle Wampe", was finally released for distribution.
„Finally“ as it was only granted the necessary licence after several cuts demanded by the censorship board had been introduced. One of them was the removal the motive of abortion (which cannot take place for the lack of money anyway) and editing the scenes in which the characters are bathing in the lake. In reality, all the demanded adjustments were but a blatant excuse - the film, produced by a proletarian/left-wing film studio Prometheus-Film, had been labelled as „posing danger to the state“ and banned on April 9th.
