On March 28, 1909 Berlin’s largest cemetery, Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf opened 35 kilometres to the south-west of the city centre and next to a Brandenburg village, Stahnsdorf.
With Berlin growing at an explosive pace, burying the dead within the city became practically impossible, so to solve the problem, the synod of Berlin’s Protestant churches decided to purchase three large plots outside the city boundaries. Stahnsdorf was one of them.
