On this day in 1852 - 173 years ago - a new waterway was officially opened in Berlin. Named after the historic district, in which the canal connected the Spree at today’s Schillingsbrücke with the Landwehrkanal at the inner-city harbour of Urbanhafen, the Luisenstädtische Kanal existed only for 75 years.
