On 29 July 1935 a twenty-something from Kaltenbach in Hessen entered Reinickendorf registry office in Berlin and approached the registrar’s desk. Katharina Disser came to report a death.
The deceased, who might not might not have been her maternal cousin (both of their mothers bore maiden names Funk), was a woman whose life - like that of few others - was filled with constant ups and downs.
Literally so. Käte Paulus, who passed away only three days earlier - on 26 July 1935 - was the first German female aeronaut and the third woman in this category worldwide…
